Accelerate Action: Celebrating International Women’s Day 2025 with WDS-SICAP

Accelerate Action: Celebrating International Women’s Day 2025 with WDS-SICAP

International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 is here, and this year’s theme is all about taking bold steps to speed up the journey toward gender equality. Under the banner “Accelerate Action,” we’re called upon to bring urgency, momentum, and resolute commitment to overcoming the systemic barriers and biases women still face worldwide.

Why “Accelerate Action” Matters

At the current rate of progress, the World Economic Forum estimates it will take until 2158—roughly five generations from now—to achieve full gender parity. This sobering statistic underscores how critical it is to pick up the pace. Women’s rights, representation, and opportunities are advancing, but far too slowly. This year’s theme calls on each of us to proactively champion inclusivity and equality, whether in the boardroom or at home, in government or education, in corporate corridors or community projects.

By focusing on “Accelerate Action,” we emphasize the power of collective resolve. When we unite our talents, networks, and voices, we have the potential to drive change faster than ever before—and ensure that future generations inherit a world where equal opportunities are the norm, not the exception.

WDS-SICAP: Stepping Up for Gender Equality

Here at WDS-SICAP, we believe in embracing diversity and creating an environment where everyone can excel. As part of our commitment to celebrating women in technology and telecom, we asked some of our inspiring female professionals to share their best advice for women considering (or currently pursuing) a career in our sector. Their insights reflect both the challenges and the triumphs that come with forging a path in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Career Tips from WDS-SICAP’s Women Leaders

1. “Don’t be Afraid”

Bo Jones, Client Services

“I think the best tip would be ‘don’t be afraid.’ It is a very interesting, always evolving sector where you'll never be bored. There’s always something new to learn and a way to advance yourself. Although it will be challenging at times, it will also be very rewarding, and you will have fun along the way.”

Key Takeaway: Embrace the fast-paced nature of tech and telecom. Push past fear, and let your curiosity guide you through challenges

2. “Support and Mentorship Make the Journey Easier”

Thembisile Baloyi, Team Lead, Customer Services

“I started as a Knowledge Author before becoming a team lead. I had a wonderful experience, thanks to my manager and colleagues, who were always willing to teach and provide guidance. I am still learning because there is a lot to learn, but I’m now confident in what I do. In the future, I’d like to transfer my knowledge to someone else just like it was done for me.”

Key Takeaway: Don’t underestimate the power of a supportive team. Seek out mentors, build strong relationships, and pay it forward by sharing knowledge and encouraging others.

3. “Always Be Connected”

Laura Rebaudengo, Chief Financial Officer

“My tip for a woman who want to enter a career in the Telco industry is to always be connected, with every device everywhere. Connected with people and with companies, connected on social media and on the job network.”

Key Takeaway: Whether it’s technology tools or personal networking, staying connected is vital. Actively build relationships, follow industry conversations online, and use every resource available to remain visible and informed.

4. “Celebrate Wins and Care for Yourself”

Catalina Fontan, VP Professional Services

“Celebrate your wins, big and small. Keep learning, stay connected with women who lift you, and be one of them. And remember, take care of your mind and body so you can keep shining.”

Key Takeaway: Recognize your accomplishments. Self-care, collaboration, and uplifting other women are crucial factors in sustaining long-term success.

5. “Overcome Imposter Syndrome and Own Your Unique Perspective”

Shivani Verma, Device Team Manager

“It’s common, especially for women, to feel like an ‘imposter’ in a traditionally male-dominated field. You’ve earned your place through your skills, hard work, and potential. Your input can lead to innovation, better problem-solving, and more inclusive solutions. By implementing these tips, women can carve out fulfilling, impactful careers in telecom/technology and help shape the future of tech!”

Key Takeaway: Own your skills and insights. Don’t be afraid to speak up or challenge the status quo—your perspective is an asset that can drive meaningful innovation.

6. “Be Confident, Persistent, and Curious”

Maria Kasharova, Sales Manager

“Be confident. Don’t let the tech sector scare you. It may seem challenging at first, but with time, you’ll discover its exciting possibilities and find your passion. If something feels overwhelming, take a step back and approach it from a different angle. Keep learning and stay curious. Build connections—networking leads to support, knowledge, and new opportunities.”

Key Takeaway: Confidence, perseverance, and a willingness to learn will carry you far. Don’t be afraid to reach out, ask questions, and cultivate meaningful connections.

7. “Focus on Mentorship, Confidence, and Resilience”

Tatiana Blinova, Sales Manager

“From my point of view, starting a career in the Telecoms/Technology sector can be both exciting and challenging, especially for women entering a field that has traditionally been male-dominated.
I’ve only recently started working in this field, but both here and in other new areas you might encounter, there are common incentives that will help you integrate into a new domain and team:
- Look for mentors—who have experience in the industry. They can provide valuable advice, help you navigate challenges, and open doors to new opportunities.
- Trust in your abilities and don’t downplay your achievements. Confidence is the key to gaining respect in the workplace and in your own life.
By staying resilient, proactive, and focused on your goals, you can build a successful career. And remember, every challenge you overcome makes you stronger and more capable. Good luck!”

Key Takeaway: Lean on mentors, practice self-confidence, and remain resilient in the face of obstacles. Each hurdle you clear only adds to your strength and capability in this ever-evolving industry.
